Strengthening Education

Access to a quality education can change a child’s life.  My dad was a Holocaust survivor who came to America with limited education. My parent’s dream of providing me a better life began with an emphasis on education. That led to my educational advocacy as an adult and my years of serving as a Watertown School Board Member.

Since first elected to the South Dakota House, I have served on the House Education Committee, providing oversight of K12 and postsecondary education in South Dakota.

I believe parents should be the primary decision makers about their children's education whether it's public education, homeschooling, or private education.  I also believe it is our responsibility to ensure all children have equal opportunity to receive a world class education within a reasonable tax structure.

Some of What I have Done

  •  Served on the South Dakota House Education Committee, overseeing education-related legislation.
  • Served on the Watertown School Board 2007-15. Two terms as board president.

  • Served on national education committee of state legislators to study the best education systems in the world.

  • Led the fight to save Big Stone School District from forced closure (passed 104-1).  One Superintendent told me the vote "wasn't just a victory for Big Stone School but for small schools everywhere."

  • Fought for historic raises for public school teachers.

  • Supported a new, fiscally responsible way to fund schools in our state that included innovation for benchmark learning for all kids in the state (SB 131).

  • Passed legislation in 2021 to allow for flexibility in the use of tax revenue received from wind towers. Introduced at the request of District 4 schools, this bill allows our schools the choice to use funds for Capitol Outlay projects like constructing a school, or for General Fund expenses.

  • Supported development of school safety plans (SB 89).

  • Supported funding projects at South Dakota Tech Schools and Universities.

  • Supported legislation to expand homeschool opportunities (2021 SB177).
